Covid main culprit as cataract strikes people below 45 yrs.

NEW DELHI: An increasing number of patients with cataracts are younger than 45 years of age and a key reason for this is Covid, some eye care specialists in Delhi have said, while warning that it was no more true that the clouding of the lenses only happened at an advanced age. The most commonly seen case of cataract is senile cataract that occurs with advanced age. Common causes of early onset of cataracts in people less than 45 years of age include poorly-controlled medical conditions such as hypertension, eczema and diabetes, chronic use of steroids, previous eye trauma, and family history of early onset of cataract, or overexposure to the sun\’s UV rays. The chairman and medical director of the Centre for Sight Group of Eye Hospitals, Dr Mahipal S Sachdev, said that 15% of the total cataract surgeries conducted nowadays are on people less than 45 years of age and 25% on people in less than 50 years of age. \”One of the major contributors of getting cataract at early age is Covid because lots of people had high doses of steroids, which is known to be causing cataract,\” he said. He added that the second prevalent cause was high myopia which can increase the risk of cataract. Another reason is the increasing incidence of diabetes. Dr Rohit Saxena, professor at Dr R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, said: \”The world over, age related cataract as a cause of visual problems is seen in persons over 60 years of age, but in India it has been observed at a much younger age. Among the causes of early onset cataract are diabetes, trauma to the eye, eye inflammation, high myopia and prolonged use of steroids. Over exposure to UV rays is also one of the risk factors.\” He added that glare from oncoming headlights at night was a common early symptom too. Dr Ikeda Lal, cornea and refractory surgery specialist at Delhi Eye Centre and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said: \”Cataract is increasingly being diagnosed among the younger population. Modern lifestyles, food choices, sedentary lifestyles and lack of exercise are leading to earlier diabetes and this is the most significant factor for this shift. Since diabetes is becoming very common among younger people, it has also contributed to increase in cataract in the younger age groups.\” He further said that there is safe and advanced surgery pssible to cure cataracts.The most delicate and microscopic parts can be easily handled, he added. According to WHO, the leading cause of vision impairment and blindness at a global level are refractive errors and cataracts. The technology we are using ensures safety and delivers optimum results.\” Corneal opacity is caused due to scarring of the cornea, a transparent structure placed just in front of the eyeball. In the case of scarring, the light fails to pass through the cornea to the retina, giving the cornea a clouded appearance. Eye injury, infections and certain eye diseases are the main reasons responsible for corneal opacity which can cause anything from minor irritation to vision loss and even blindness. In fact, corneal problems are the fourth leading cause of blindness after glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. \”Patients with old corneal scars often also develop a squint which together is very disfiguring,\” Professor Rohit Saxena, Dr R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi, told IANS. \”Those patients who do not have any potential for vision corneal tattooing with corrective squint surgery gives these patients confidence and happiness and helps them to achieve their full potential,\” he added. Conjunctivitis: Doctors See 40% Rise In Viral Pink Eye Cases Among Kids, Adults covered by Zeenews

Conjunctivitis or pink eye is the inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and eyeball. There is about a 40 per cent increase in cases of conjunctivitis in the last week. Recent flood situation and hot and humid season has led to an increase in the number of patients coming with redness of eyes, stinging and burning,\” Dr. Rohit Saxena, Professor of Ophthalmology, AIIMS, New Delhi, told IANS. cre Trending Stories \”We are observing about a 30 per cent increase in the number of patients coming with viral conjunctivitis. In viral conjunctivitis, patients usually complain of stickiness of the eyes, burning, irritation and redness,\” added Dr. Ikeda Lal, an ophthalmologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. Dr Saxena noted that children are more prone to conjunctivitis during this season, and precaution should be taken in order to protect eyes especially during this season when weather is hot. However, \”the use of over-the-counter medications, particularly for children, is not recommended. Children\’s eyes are still developing, and any interference with their growth and function can lead to long-term vision problems or other complications\”, Dr Nilesh Giri, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon, Surya Mother and Child Super Speciality Hospital, Pune, told IANS. Pune is also seeing an increase in the viral cases of eye flu. Dr Giri said that the current outbreak of conjunctivitis is primarily caused by the adenovirus, which is a common virus responsible for conjunctivitis. It is a self-limiting condition, and no specific antiviral medications are effective against it. The infection typically resolves within 10-15 days. However, to minimise the risk of contracting the infection, it is essential to avoid touching one\’s eyes consciously and to refrain from touching potentially common surfaces. He also advised caution when using over-the-counter (OTC) medications containing high-dose steroids, which are generally sold in pharmacies. \”These drugs may interfere with the delicate development of the eyes, potentially leading to complications such as corneal opacity and loss of corneal transparency. Severe cases may even require surgical intervention,\” Dr Giri said. \”Individuals with known allergies or sensitivities to certain components in OTC medications may experience allergic reactions ranging from mild redness to severe swelling,\” Dr. Satya Karna, Director, Department of Ophthalmology, Jaypee Hospital, Noida, told IANS. \”OTC medications may provide symptomatic relief, but they do not address the root cause of conjunctivitis, potentially delaying proper diagnosis and treatment. Steroid eye drops are one such medication,\” he added. Doctors advised people to not rub eyes if they itch; wash eyes with clean water; use cold compresses for mild itching. They also stated that people experiencing significant redness, irritation, and excessive watering of the eyes must seek consultation with an ophthalmologist, who is likely to suggest use of lubricating eye drops and antihistamine eye drops, depending on the symptoms. They also recommended children to avoid crowded places, refrain from sharing items such as towels or napkins, as this could make them vulnerable to the infection, and avoid long hours in direct sun, use protective eyewear, and drink lots of water.
